Recent progress in understanding the genetic bases of retinal degenerative diseases has made it possible to test new treatments that target the fundamental defects which cause such conditions. Testing is further aided by the identification of strains of animals that have blindness caused by the identical genetic defects that occur in humans with similar symptoms.
